Last week we celebrated the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday. Before we did that, though, I wanted to do a "goodbye to the Alleluia" to help the kids realize why we don't sing songs with "Alleluia" in them during Lent. So, that meant making an Alleluia banner (actually I made a ban which is just a skinny banner that could hang along a normal banner) for our devotion area and finally putting up the picture, crucifix, and crosses that we had been planning to hang.
I forgot to take a picture of the Alleluia banner before we did our goodbye service on Tuesday night and "buried" it in a shoebox until Easter, so hopefully Easter morning (or soon after) I'll remember to snap of quick picture of it. The kids got to help choose colors and decorate the butterfly on it.
Here's a partially completed devotion area - the first picture of the banner.
Ephraim, Tabi and Jo with their footprints.
Another one of the kids with their sweet footprints.
One footprint from each kid as we are "Walking with Jesus" through Lent.
Here's just the banner.
I also made a prayer chain to help us to count down to Easter. Each morning one kid (whoever's day it is) tears off one link and then we pray for the person whose name is written there. They are loving this and Ephraim has so far gotten each name correct - love the dual purpose of reading skills practice. The kids also love peeking at the links to try to find the ones with their own names on them. Too cute!
The last decoration I made this year was a cross from clothespins. I plan to replace the felt cloth with a more flow-y material, but felt was all I had available right now.
Here's our decorated devotion area (complete with shoebox on the "altar"). I love how it turned out and can't wait to make banners for the rest of the seasons of the church year as well as for the cross.
